Getting an MOT test for your vehicle

This article has been written to give you all of the information that you need about getting an MOT test for your vehicle.

What is an MOT test?

An MOT test is an inspection of your vehicle, making sure it meets the minimum acceptable environmental and road safety standards required by law.

Which vehicles need an MOT test?

Every vehicle that is three years old or over must have a current MOT test certificate and you must renew this once a year. If you have a car, it’s your responsibility to make sure that it is examined annually.

You can find out when your current MOT expires by looking at your test certificate.

Which checks are included in an MOT?

The MOT test covers numerous parts of the vehicle, from the braking system and fuel system to seatbelts, wipers, mirrors, lights and exhaust. An MOT test does not include tests on the engine, gearbox or clutch.

How to check the MOT status of a vehicle?

You can check the MOT status of a vehicle online on this government webpage. You will need the vehicle’s registration number to hand.

Where can I have an MOT test done?

There are thousands of garages and repair shops that can do MOT tests and issue certificates. The test usually takes around 45 minutes and you don’t have to book, but it is recommended that you do.
