The GMC has partnered up with Digidentity allowing doctors to now complete their GMC identity checks using a free app. The app is secure and the details you provide in-app for your identity check will not be retained within the app itself. Instead, they will be securely stored in your Digidentity account, accessible only by you through a secure PIN.
Before you proceed with the identity check, make sure to have your identity documents within reach. It is recommended that you use your passport. Other documents are accepted, however, you may be contacted for additional information. Documents which are not accepted include:
- Expired documents
- Scanned or photocopies
- Provisional UK driving licenses
- Syrian passports issued before August 2023
How do I complete an identity check using the app?
Download the Digidentity Wallet app on your mobile phone. Ensure your phone is updated with iOS 14, Android 9 or a later version.
Log into your GMC Online account and navigate to the ‘My ID checks’ section. Click on ‘Digital ID checks’ and follow the step-by-step guide to complete the verification. When prompted to create your Digidentity account, make sure to use the email you were originally contacted on to complete the check.
When capturing your photo, aim for an acceptable passport-style photo. Try to capture it against a plain, light-coloured background, with no obstructions covering your face and excluding other people. This image will stay on the system, and it may be shared with your employer upon their request.
After finishing the required steps in the Digidentity Wallet app, you need to return to the ‘Digital ID check’ section on GMC Online and follow the on-screen instructions. This is so Digidentity can send the details of your check to the GMC to review.
Ensure you complete this step within 45 days of finishing the check. Failure to do so will result in the GMC not receiving your information from the app, and you will need to repeat the upload process.
What happens after completing the check?
Upon successful completion of all app-related steps, expect to receive an email confirmation from Digidentity, indicating that your registration is finalized. This confirmation signifies that they have processed your details, and no further actions are required on the app. It’s important to note, that if you are awaiting approval of your application for GMC registration, the email from Digidentity does not permit you to practice medicine in the UK. You will receive a separate email once your registration has been approved.
Once Digidentity has shared the results of your check, the GMC will review them and email you to confirm whether your check has been successful. The waiting time is up to 10 days, you can also monitor progress via the ‘Digital ID check’ section of your GMC Online account.
If, for any reason, you cannot use the app, you will need to book an appointment at the GMC’s London office to complete your check in person. Your invitation email will provide details on how to book an appointment.
